Utility vehicles and HGVs.

Accidents involving HGVs are particularly serious: in 2021, they were fatal in 14% of cases, compared to 5% for accidents without HGVs. 89% of those killed in accidents involving a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) are not HGV users, 31% are vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorized two-wheelers). 2 out of 3 HGV users are killed in accidents without third parties.

In 2021, 70% of those killed in crashes involving a CUV are out of CUV. Of these 241 people killed, 61% are vulnerable users (48 pedestrians, 29 cyclists and 69 motorized two-wheelers) and 38% are motorists.

Commercial vehicles (CUVs) are vehicles intended for the transport of goods with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of between 1.5 tons and 3.5 tons. The fleet and routes of commercial vehicles are increasing: between 2012 and 2019, the fleet increased by +11% and the number of kilometers traveled by +9%, while over the same period the fleet of heavy trucks stagnated (+1%). In 2021, 7.0% of vehicles involved in an injury accident were LCVs, although these vehicles make 14% of the trips in France. In fatal accidents involving LCVs, 59% of LCV drivers are presumed to be responsible. This proportion is 36% for truck drivers and 69% for car drivers.
