According to the Data and Statistical Studies Department (SDES) of the Ministry of Transport and the French Automobile Manufacturers' Committee (CCFA), and after a rebasement in 2023, there are nearly 46 million vehicles with 4 or more wheels registered in France:
- nearly 38.5 million passenger cars (including nearly 3 million running on alternative energies);
- 6.4 million light commercial vehicles;
- 612,000 heavy goods vehicles;
- 91,000 buses or coaches.
There were 28.0 million in 1990, 33.5 million in 2000, 39.9 million in 2010 and 43.9 million in 2020.
For the fleet of two-wheeled motor vehicles, the estimate is made by ONISR based on SDES data re-estimated from the centralised car registration number file. In 2024, the number of two-wheeled motor vehicles on the road is estimated at 2.7 million, including 1.7 million heavy motorcycles (over 125 cm3) and 0.7 million light motorcycles (up to 125 cm3). The total fleet (roadworthy and non-roadworthy) of two-wheeled motor vehicles is estimated at 3.4 million vehicles.
Within the two-wheeled motor vehicle fleet, it is estimated that 4.0% of vehicles will be electric in 2024. This share has increased significantly since 2020 (1.3%), mainly driven by small ‘displacement’ vehicles. Indeed, ONISR estimates that 17.7% of mopeds and 4.6% of light motorcycles will be electric in 2024 (5.8% and 0.7% respectively in 2020). The share of electric vehicles among heavy motorcycles is marginal (0.3% in 2024).
