Mainland regions

In 2024, the Île-de-France region accounted for 8% of road deaths and 31% of accidents causing injury in mainland France, even though the region is home to only 19% of the total mainland population.

On average over the period 2020-2024, mortality relative to population ranges from 22 deaths per million inhabitants in Île-de-France to 87 in Corsica. Of the 13 metropolitan regions, six have a rate of less than 50 deaths per million inhabitants, namely Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Hauts-de-France, Île-de-France, Normandy, Pays de la Loire and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.

The risk relative to the population varies significantly between different age groups. It is particularly high among 18-24 year olds: between 2020 and 2024, there were 93 deaths per million inhabitants among young people, compared with an average of 46 in metropolitan France. Among young people aged 25-34, there were 56 deaths per million inhabitants during this period in metropolitan France. Finally, among those aged 65 and over, the metropolitan average mortality rate was 57 deaths per million inhabitants.

During the period 2020-2024, the regions of Corsica and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté presented the highest risks for each age group. In Corsica, the risk of being killed was 187 per million inhabitants among 18-24 year olds, 89 per million inhabitants among 25-34 year olds and 105 per million inhabitants among those aged 65 and over. In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the observed risk was 145, 86 and 85 respectively. Île-de-France had the lowest risk for each age group, with values consistently below 40 deaths per million inhabitants.
