Vehicle fleet
According to the Data and Statistical Studies Department (SDES) of the Ministry of Transport and the Comité des Constructeurs Français Automobiles (CCFA), in 2021, there are nearly 44,5 million vehicles with 4 or more wheels registered in France :
- nearly 37.9 million passenger cars (almost 15 million gasoline and 21.4 million diesel)
- 6 million light commercial vehicles (mostly diesel)
- 600 000 heavy goods vehicles
- 100 000 autobus or autocars.
There were 28.1 million in 1990, 33.4 million in 2000 and 37.6 million in 2010, 44 million in 2021.
The estimation of the number of motorcycles in circulation is complicated, very often owners of motorcycles keep their previous machines when they acquire new ones. Thus several studies/surveys have been conducted to better understand the 2-3RM park.
